Grand prix series
A week ago Tomas competed in the NHK Trophy in Japan and finished in 5th place. Up next Tomas was scheduled to compete at the Cup of Russia, but unfortunately he decided to withdraw from this event.
Before the start of the NHK Trophy Tomas very much looked forward to the competition. "I'm so excited to compete, that I even had trouble to fall asleep. The competition in Japan is one of the best out of the grand prix; the organisation is great and the audience is very knowledgeable." However even then he still had trouble with his back. "I'm not that flexible, there are things in the spins and steps I cannot do properly because of the injury.
"During the short program Tomas had a lot of trouble. He landed all the jumps, but not very clean and Tomas also lost a lot of points in the spins and in the steps where he lost his balance once and fell. He ended up in a dissapointing 9th place with a score of 62.96 points
In the free program Tomas managed to fight back up a couple of places. He opened his program with a smashing 4T which earned him a lot of credit from the judges. The rest of the performance was certainly a lot better than a day before. Tomas just enjoyed himself despite of it all and it defenitely showed. Tomas was rewarded with a score of 133.67 for this performance, having the 3rd best PCS of the evening!
Full result details can be found on the ISU website.
When Tomas came home from the NHK Trophy he noticed that the long travel and competing did take a toll on his body. "I need some more time to recover from my back injury and rehabilitate. I lost 2 months in my preperation before the start of the season. I need to take some time to train properly so I can be fully prepared before the start of the next competition"
This is why Tomas withdrew from the competition in Russia. "On one side I would like to compete and gain back my confidence on ice. On the other side the main focus is now on getting my back in full health again. I want to be in full health when the most important competitions roll around and compete with the best. I think some good quality training will do me better right now than competing in the grand prix series."
We wish Tomas good luck in gaining back his full health, hoping he can kick ass during the 2nd part of the season!
